Looking for FREE CEUs?
We offer two FREE CE Courses for Addiction Counselors and other Mental Health professionals.
We offer two free courses - Free Course 1B and Free Course 1D. The number of Credit Hours awarded varies, depending upon your licensing board. [Check the catalog description for credit hour specifics]. Each of these two courses awards an instantly downloaded free CE certificate.
So, go ahead! SIGN UP for a FREE CEU COURSE - or sign up for TWO FREE CEU COURSES, if you want to experience both of the formats that we currently offer. There's an overview of each of the two courses which offer free CEUs, below, and detailed course descriptions in the catalog.
Free Course 1B - 'It's Not Your Grandpa's Chevy - Intro to Goals, Clinical Concerns, and Opportunities In Behavioral Health Managed Care and the ACA' - is a free slideshow course offered in a PDF format so that those with mobile devices can view it. This course addresses the key Client Record Documentation issues facing AOD and mental health providers who are involved in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of clients.
Free Course 1B is particularly helpful for those working within any form of health care reform - including the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This is a 'non-traditional' course that you won't find anywhere else. And although it's non-traditional, it's pre-approved!
Free Course 1D - 'Substance Abuse: Clinical Issues in Intensive Outpatient Treatment' - is a SUMMARY of a larger document published by SAMHSA which addresses assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of substance abuse disorders in an IOP setting. This is one of our 'Quiz Only' Courses - you can print and save the document and the quiz for free, whether you pay the fee to take the quiz and get your certificate, or not!
Health Care Reform and Addiction
And what about Alcohol and Drug Treatment in a Health Care Reform environment? In our Addiction Catalog, you can enroll in courses that explain how things have changed for Addiction Treatment under Managed Care! Understand this radical shift, and how to survive it. Course 3B offers 5 CEUs, 3.25 NBCC Hours, and 5 EACC PDHs, in a course that describes the evolution of addiction treatment under Health Care Reform.
Course 2B clearly illustrates 12 problematic 'documentation syndromes' which will sabotage even the best and most experienced clinicians - including the 'POORLY DOCUMENTED LEVEL OF CARE’ Syndrome, the ‘ZOMBIE CLIENT’ Syndrome, the ‘PERPETUAL CARE’ Syndrome, the ‘ANY-PATIENT ITP’ Syndrome, the ‘FAILURE TO MODIFY’ Syndrome, and several more.

More About Managed Health Care and AOD:
THERE'S A MAJOR TRANSITION IN THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND ADDICTION FIELD, WHICH SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTS ALCOHOL AND DRUG COUNSELORS. It's brought on by Managed Care - and now more than ever by the Federal Health Care Reform initiative (the Affordable Care Act, or ACA).
How does this impact the AOD field? LCDCs, LSATs, LCDPs, LADCs, LACACs, LPATs and other Drug Counselors -- are you saying a fast or slow goodbye to those dependable Block Grant contracts? Then take a look at Course 3B - 'The Big Transition In The AOD Field'. It's about surviving the latest shifts in our traditional Addiction Treatment culture. Like what? Like changing up the way that we have always delivered CD-AOD services, with the arrival of new behavioral health contract arrangements. It's a 3-Credit Hour Course.

Jump to Course 3B in the Catalog - 'Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency Treatment - The Big Transition'
a.k.a., "The Big Transition in the AOD Field: Assessment of 'Need For Treatment' and 'Treatment Interventions' - How They've CHANGED!'
For those of you who are providing traditional addiction services, and struggling daily with the criteria for obtaining those services - have you seen some particularly disconcerting changes lately?
Is your Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency contractor wanting something different in the way of treatment for your clients? Like, less intensive services? Shorter stays? Fewer clients authorized for the treatment you think they need? Wondering how to survive these shifts?
This course addresses the 'nitty gritty' of major programmatic, therapeutic, and philosophical changes taking place within the traditional Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) treatment culture, due to a new health care environment. Material applies to single AOD diagnosis and to Dual MH-AOD diagnoses.
The course offers a bird's eye view of how ASSESSMENT of the NEED for TREATMENT - and HOW we DELIVER treatment - have changed under Managed Care and other insurance plans . . . and how to constructively adapt when it's ethically possible.
We also provide an understanding of HOW the MCOs make those controversial treatment decisions for substance abusing and chemically dependent individuals during the CARE MANAGEMENT or Utilization Review (UR) process - and how to ASK for 'WHAT' from the MCO's care manager, to maximize your chances of getting what your clients need.
Click here for Course 2B in the Catalog For something different . . . this course shows how to DOCUMENT both your assessment of need for CD-SA-AOD treatment, and the treatment you deliver - in a way that reduces the chance that your request to provide a particular treatment will denied, and/or that already-paid claims will be 'RECOUPED' by the MCO.
CREDITS FOR SAPs: Are you a US Department of Transportation (DOT) SAP needing to renew your license/certification? You can get your 12 hours of relevant CE here. Read on below for the five course options which we recommend.
DOT does not specify the continuing education courses for SAP renewal other than that they must be 'relevant to your performance of SAP duties'. On page 4 of the DOT Substance Abuse Professional Guidelines, DOT defines the type of CE which is required for SAP license renewal: "Continuing Education: During each three-year period following satisfactory completion of your training and examination, you must complete at least 12 professional development hours (e.g., Continuing Education Units) relevant to your performing SAP duties."
Although all of the courses on our site are approved for addiction by the certification entities cited by DoT for SAP (IC&RC, NAADAC, and NBCC), five courses on our site would be particularly relevant to your DOT SAP license renewal:
1. AOD Course 5H - Alcohol Problems in Intimate Relationships: Identification and Intervention with Families and Couples (5 credit hours) - is particularly relevant for working with individuals who are not readily admitting to an alcohol problem. This course includes multiple standardized and empirically validated AOD ASSESSMENT FORMS which may be saved and printed on your computer for personal use. (Whether you decide to enroll in this course and take the quiz or not, you can download these forms for free.)
2. Course 4J - Anger Management for Substance Abuse and Mental Health Clients: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Manual - one of our most popular courses.
3. Course 3B - Addiction & Substance Abuse Treatment - 'The Big Transition' This course is relevant to your SAP duty which requires you to develop and recommend a treatment plan for those whom you evaluate. The course addresses how the traditional treatments and recommendations for AOD Abuse have changed under health care reform ('Managed Care') - and how clinicians can document the need for treatment in a way that will be approved by Care Managers in both public and commercial health care plans.
4. Courses 5K and 5L - Parts 1 and 2 of 'After The War Zone - Why Coming Home Is the Hardest Part of the War.' If you are working with veterans with PTSD and substance abuse issues, these two courses are quite helpful. Using CBT principles, War Zone military vets are encouraged to develop their own recovery plan without the use of traditional intervention techniques which are counter-productive with military veterans. Read about these two courses here on VETERANS ISSUES page - OR click 'COURSES' ON THE TOOL BAR, THEN SCROLL DOWN TO 'VETERANS ISSUES'.
You can find all five of these courses at the bottom of the Addiction Catalog - CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE ADDICTION CATALOG COURSE LIST.
You should have no problems in terms of the acceptability of these courses for DOT credit. We are a Licensed CE Provider for NBCC (ACEP #6338), and an IC&RC Member Board (the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals - TCBAP) and for a NAADAC approved Addiction Professional Association (the Texas Association of Addiction Professionals - TAAP). Our provider number for both of these Addiction authorities is #1877-12. Our course credits are automatically accepted by NAADAC, IC&RC, and by all branches of the US Military.
