HIV and Harm Reduction Models - SAMHSA

Welcome to CEU By Net's HIV Course Catalog. Select from HIV courses with varying perspectives — including HARM REDUCTION models for treatment of people dually diagnosed with HIV and SUD and/or SMI.

Although politically rejected and misunderstood in some communities, Harm Reduction programs are an essential approach to effective SUD and HIV prevention and treatment.

HIV is an additional risk factor for those who inject Fentanyl, in addition to the risk of fatal overdose.

Prevention and treatment of HIV and Fentanyl overdose are particularly challenging with people who are not yet ready for abstinence.

SAMHSA's three HIV Harm Reduction models (found in Courses 8K and 1K) demonstrate that abstinance-resistant individuals can and do respond to Harm Reduction programming.

Likewise, those who have survived a near-fatal Fentanyl overdose can learn to prevent such life-threatening events through targeted harm reduction approaches (Course 4SUD).
